New Classroom Blocks for Mapengani Primary School
Project background
Mapengani Primary School was severely affected by storm damage and had no way of sourcing enough money for the repairs needed. We got involved with the school at this time, working to repair the storm damage, for which the school was very grateful. However, we recognised that there was still much more that could be done to improve the experience of staff and students at the school.
How did we help?
We raised enough funding to begin construction on two new blocks for the school, which took the total number from 3 to 5 (and from 6 to 10 classrooms). Working alongside a team of volunteers from the local community, we developed the buildings in just a few short months. We were then able to furnish the new classrooms with much-needed furniture and teaching supplies.
In addition, we were able to train up a team of volunteers, who then gained valuable skills in plumbing, electrics, carpentry and more.
Project outcomes
The response from the students, teaching staff and team of local volunteers was amazing. Mapengani was able to take on an additional 150 students because of the new facilities, and the academic performance of the school improved shortly after the opening of the new buildings. Additionally, the teachers felt happier about their work and more competent in their own ability, and they were also pleased to get dedicated spaces for administration as well as their own staff room for the very first time.
Many of those volunteers went to work in skilled professions as a result of their taking part in the project.
We're extremely proud of our work with the school, and we continue to have a great relationship with them today.
