Mpilo Hospital Renovation
Project background
The Mpilo hospital is located in Bulawayo, a major city in Zimbabwe and serves a large population. The infectious diseases ward of the hospital had not been redeveloped for many years, and it was clear that a complete renovation project could be a great help to the community.
This project is very close on the heart of our founder, Dumi Moyo, as both of his parents received treatment in this ward. He was therefore eager for a chance to improve the lives of his home community.
How did we help?
Dumi International Aid was able to work closely with partners in Zimbabwe as well as generous supporters here in the UK to raise thousands of pounds for the full redevelopment of the site. This included a massive renovation effort as well as supplying medical and cleaning equipment to give the hospital what it needed to serve the community.
The renovation work we led included:
- Gutting/clearing out the previous ward
- Replacing old toilets, sinks and units
- Installing new showers
- Painting, carpentry, plumbing and electric work
Project outcomes
This project has had a massive impact on the community. Not only has it increased the capacity of the ward, it also improved the psychological well-being of the patients that come through its doors. The new ward has become a better place for families and visitors to see their loved ones, improved staff morale and raised the profile of health services within the region.
We're extremely grateful for the support of Coventry and Nuneaton Methodist Circuit and all who were involved in this amazing project. The work is not done yet; we're currently raising funds for an entire suite of hospital beds to increase quality of care provided at the ward for all patients.
